This course will assist a dental practice or dental laboratory better understand their requirements for a Lockout / Tagout Program. A dental practice under NAICS code 621210 is considered a low hazard industry. A dental laboratory under NAICS code 339116 is considered a high hazard industry as of 2015. No matter the level of hazard, the dental community must implement elements of Lockout Tagout if they apply to their business according to the OSHA Standards. A covered employer would develop a Lockout/Tagout Program to protect workers from hazardous energy when repairing or performing preventive maintenance on equipment. The purpose of LO/TO is to de-energize the equipment, therefore, the employer must assess hazardous energy sources and develop procedures to control the hazardous energy. Potential exposures to hazardous energy can be fatal. This course will review the elements of the Lockout/Tagout Program including the written program, procedures, and training.

Learn how to assess the dental practice’s current infection prevention practices in order to determine where improvement needs to occur to protect not only dental health care personnel, but also patients. This course is relevant to dentists, dental staff, anyone responsible for infection prevention in their workplace According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), transmission of infectious agents among patients and dental health care personnel in dental settings can be prevented by observing Standard Precautions and other infection prevention practices. The 2003 CDC Guidelines for Dentistry were reviewed by the CDC and a Summary of Infection Prevention Practices in Dental Settings (the Summary) was issued in March 2016. The CDC recommends that dental practices review their infection prevention practices on a regular basis by appointing an Infection Prevention Coordinator (IFC) to assume this responsibility. This course will review the responsibilities of the IFC using the CDC’s Infection Prevention Checklist which is a part of the Summary. The IPC should ensure that equipment and supplies, which includes hand hygiene products, safer devices to reduce percutaneous injuries, and personal protective equipment, are available. The IFC should also maintain communication with all staff members to address specific issues or concerns related to infection prevention.

Are your workers some of the estimated 5 million workers who are required to wear respirators in U.S. workplaces? The Silica Standard could require more employers to require respirators in their workplace, therefore, this course will assist employers with a better understanding of the requirements of OSHA’s Respiratory Protection Standard. Respirators are also required to protect workers from hazardous atmosphere which could include insufficient oxygen environments that can be found in confined spaces. This course will help employers identify if OSHA’s Confined Space Entry requirements apply to their workplace and how to protect their workers from these hazards.

Fall protection is important because it saves lives! According to the Bureau of Labor statistics falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. At the end of FY2016 BLS reported that workplace fatalities increased by 7% from the prior year. In that fiscal year, BLS reported that over one-third of workplace fatalities for construction workers resulted in death due to falls. Slips, trips, and falls make up most of general industry accidents. Employers must take measures in their workplaces to prevent employees from falling off overhead platforms or elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls. OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at elevations of four feet in general industry workplaces, five feet in shipyards, six feet in the construction industry and eight feet in longshoring operations. In addition, OSHA requires that fall protection be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance. In this course, you will learn:
  • Hazard Communication
  • Emergency Action Planning
  • Safety on walking and working surfaces
  • Ladder and stair safety
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Confined spaces and controls
  • Equipment and machine guarding
  • Ergonomics and musculoskeletal disorders
