Fall protection is important because it saves lives!
According to the Bureau of Labor statistics falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries and deaths. At the end of FY2016 BLS reported that workplace fatalities increased by 7% from the prior year. In that fiscal year, BLS reported that over one-third of workplace fatalities for construction workers resulted in death due to falls. Slips, trips, and falls make up most of general industry accidents. Employers must take measures in their workplaces to prevent employees from falling off overhead platforms or elevated work stations or into holes in the floor and walls. OSHA requires that fall protection be provided at elevations of four feet in general industry workplaces, five feet in shipyards, six feet in the construction industry and eight feet in longshoring operations. In addition, OSHA requires that fall protection be provided when working over dangerous equipment and machinery, regardless of the fall distance. In this course, you will learn:
- How to identify types of fall hazards within the workplace,
- Recognize methods to eliminate or protect against fall hazards
- Examine components of a Personal Fall Arrest System (PFAS)
- Review employer/employee responsibilities
